History of FISS

Picture
‘Daily collective worship, of a broadly Christian character, should be provided by schools to promote children’s spiritual, moral and cultural development.’
1988 Education Reform Act.

This is the window of opportunity that was taken by Churches Together in Scarborough to set up Faith in Scarborough Schools (AKA FISS) in 1998.  This statement still applies today.

Bruce Clark was charged with the responsibility of starting and running FISS.   It began running at two days a week but, very soon, thanks to the generosity of local Christians and Churches, FISS soon supported a full time worker.  Bruce continued to run FISS for around twenty years, making a lasting impression on many children and young people in Scarborough and the surrounding area.  He was supported by a loyal band of volunteers to run clubs and assemblies in schools.

Catherine took over from Bruce in September of 2018 when Bruce retired and Christina Bramley joined her in September, 2019.
We still have our loyal volunteers to ably assist us.

It is our firm conviction that people read us, essentially, as people, and not our skills etc. They are more informed by who we are and how we relate, more than how we 'perform'.   As the Apostle Paul put it " We are Gods epistles ..." It's who we are, more than the successful presentation in what we do, that is key.   Not that we should 'not do our best' - God knows how many hours it can take to prepare one 20 minute assembly! But I do not rely on that.   The kite, for me, symbolises this.

Alongside the kite I would like to put the scripture:

"Stand strong in the freedom in which Christ has set us free"

Stand strong = The rope which keeps us grounded ... The Bible.
Freedom
= The Wind blowing the Kite.
Christ = The Cross in the Centre

We are the kite on display. I am not a teacher. I do not claim to have any professional teaching skills but as I go into the schools (and this would be the same for any Christian) so, just being there, as 'me', is the raw material that God uses to communicate himself.  We incarnate God in all we do wherever we are and in so doing bring the good news of Gods love into the hearts of Children and Staff..
